Warm Fuzzies and Cold Pricklies
Years ago my spiritual mentor told me this story and it had a profound effect on me. Once upon a time there was a village. All of the people in the village got along very well. There was kindness, love, compassion, and justice. Every person in the village owned a special bag. It was given to them by their parents at the age of 3.
I remember sitting up very alert and interested. Maybe I was interested because it rang true. I had experienced warm fuzzies and cold pricklies. For the first time I had the words to label my internal experience. Identifying a negative encounter can help you rise above it.

I introduce the children to the feelings that we get from when someone does something nice and call it 'warm fuzzies' and the opposite feelings for 'cold pricklies'. I also draw the children's attention to the fact that when they get a warm fuzzy given to them you want to give one back ie a smile and this also goes for cold pricklies ie how a fight starts. I then get the children to make clouds with their own warm fuzzies ideas written on such as; playing a nice game, or making up with a friend and spikey shapes with cold pricklies on ie; hitting someone, or being called a name. I make a display of these and label them the land of cold pricklies and warm fuzzies. The children have a bug each with their name on which begins in the land of warm fuzzies as I trust them to keep to our class rules already in place and if they do a cold prickly thing they have to move their bug themselves to the cold pricklies land. A thought-provoking Powerpoint presentation, which can be used as a stimulus for discussing different types of emotions.

I am looking for a story that was read to me when I was in middle school which was a very long time ago. I can't remember the exact name of it but it was something along the lines of Warm Fuzzies and Cold Pricklies. It was about a witch who came to a town and was turning all the warm fuzzies into cold pricklies. The teacher who read it to us gave us a hard pricklie sweetgum ball for the cold pricklies and a brightly colored pom pom ball for the warm fuzzies. Ad I still have both of mine somewhere in all of my old school stuff.
