The author, The John Birch Society CEO Art Thompson devoted much of his life to uncovering the agenda behind common historic events and organizes it in a way for the reader to think for himself. To the victor go the spoils. But, alas, this has all too often resulted in misconceptions, myths, and outright lies being taught and believed by future generations. History seldom lets truth get in the way of a good story. By ringing a bell before serving his dogs food, he created a link between the two in their minds. Subsequently, the dogs would start reacting to the sound of the bell alone by salivating, thus being conditioned to react to a neutral event otherwise unrelated to food. History is the polemics of the victor, William F. Buckley once said. Not so in the United States, at least not regarding the Civil War. As soon as the Confederates laid down their arms, some picked up their pens and began to distort what they had done and why. The Confederates won with the pen and the noose what they could not win on the battlefield: the cause of white supremacy and the dominant understanding of what the war was all about. We are still digging ourselves out from under the misinformation they spread, which has manifested in our public monuments and our history books.
